What This Project Is (and Isn’t)
This project compiles names already published on Focus on the Family’s public contributor pages.
It is not a petition, accusation, or pressure effort.
It is an open invitation for contributors to consider how Focus’s messaging frames divorce in domestic violence situations—and how those messages may influence frightened spouses and children seeking safety.
Reflecting on What We Believe About Divorce and Domestic Violence
Take a few moments to read these questions—to better understand your own beliefs about faith, marriage, and safety.

Do you believe divorce for domestic violence is always a sin?

Have you known a victim of domestic violence—perhaps a parent, family member, or friend—whose divorce you believed was a good decision in a terrible situation?

Do you believe God hates divorce in every case—more than He hates repeated violence or cruelty to a spouse, or sexual exploitation of a child?

Should Focus on the Family give clear teaching that sometimes divorce can be an acceptable (not sinful) choice in cases of domestic violence?

Why These Questions?
Based on my review of Focus on the Family’s U.S. website, I have not found any official policy statement that includes domestic violence as an acceptable reason for divorce, only adultery and abandonment. Rather, I have found the opposite: that Focus on the Family does not mention divorce as an acceptable option for abused Christian spouses.
In one Focus on the Family article titled “Pedophilia in Marriage,” describing a wife whose husband had repeatedly committed what she called “unspeakable acts” against her young niece, the guidance given to her includes the phrase “God hates divorce” — rather than highlighting Jesus’ strong protection of children (the millstone warning) or His clear permission in the Gospels for divorce in cases of sexual immorality.
In a more recent Focus article about an abusive home with children, the mother is encouraged to leave for safety — yet the piece also mentions twice that “God hates divorce” and twice that “divorce is a sin.”
Across the U.S. Focus on the Family site, even in posts mentioning physical violence, I have not found examples where divorce is described as an acceptable or godly option for the victim.
