SWITCH CHURCHES, OR STAY, WHEN YOU DIVORCE?

Nearly 6 in 10 Christians switch churches and leave their former church when they divorce. Lifeway Research (affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention) did a survey of church-going Christian divorcees and found that most Christians, nearly 6 in 10 of them, switched churches when they divorced. No abuse or betray victim needs the pressure, gossip, or judgment that comes from a condemning pastor and leadership team. When you need a life-saving divorce, and your church doesn't understand, you may need to divorce your spouse and your pastor too, and find one who is aware of abuse dynamics and is supportive of victims and their children.

    1. —Be aware that 1 in 4 highly religious couples have experienced abuse in their relationship. Far more than have ever admitted it to you. It is a source of shame. They keep quiet and don't come forward.
    2. —Understand WHY they don't come forward, or if they do, they cover it up or minimize it or explain it away. Click link to hear abuse survivors tell why they stayed silent: www.livesavingdivorce.com/stay-2
    3. —Teach staff and volunteers how to recognize abuse and the first thing to say and do. Here's a link to a page that includes a FREE domestic violence training video for church staff, created by a pastor who testified in a murder trial involving a couple in his own church.
    4. —5 Ways to change how your church thinks about marital abuse.
    5. —Read the words of abuse survivors who tell about wonderful pastors and terrible pastors.
    6. —Know that divorce is actually better for kids than staying in a highly destructive marriage.
    7. A two-parent married home is NOT always better than a single-parent home. Where there are 3 or more destructive traits in a parent, the risk to the children of developing conduct disorders is higher.
